Whether it is in a dreamer’s head or in an auditorium performance, music only exists when heard. It is a hearing art and every pitch, duration, interval and silence heard has a precise and distinctive effect on the listener. Musical composition must honor this truth first and last, because music is always and only what is heard and not what one may conceptualize about it. As Hindemith said so simply, “A true musician believes only what he hears.” We can replace the word “musician” with “audience” and achieve another liberating vision of the music experience.
